The Kids Legacy Checklist

Why this matters now

The six conversations every parent must have — before life makes them for you

A guardian must be named in a written, witnessed Will, or a court decides for you. A minor cannot receive an insurance payout directly; a Trust structures it responsibly, released as they grow rather than as one lump sum. None of it needs a lawyer’s office to begin: six sections, one conversation per weekend, everything documented.

One afternoon. Two parents. Everything your child’s guardian would need.

This free checklist gives you the six most important areas to cover for your child — from their health and school to guardianship, money, insurance and legal documents.

Work through it with your co-parent, or with your family as a group. Tick each box as you complete it and write the answers in the margin or a notebook. Don’t rush: one section per conversation is enough. Keep a copy somewhere two family members can find it, then use the Kids Legacy Tracker to store the actual details.

Health & Medical

The information no caregiver should have to guess: allergies, medications, the pediatrician, the preferred hospital.

Education & School

So their education doesn’t pause for anyone: school and class, the teacher, the fee schedule, where the records live.

Guardianship & Care

The decision most parents delay: a primary and a backup guardian, both asked, both agreed, in writing.

Financial Provision

What is being built for their future, and whether it is protected: savings, a Trust Fund, the chama.

Insurance & Protection

What is in place and the gaps that put your child at risk: life cover, current beneficiaries, payout through a Trust.

Legal & Final Wishes

The paperwork that decides who raises your child if you can’t: the witnessed Will, the lawyer, where the original is kept.

This checklist is for you if

You are the parent who decides before a court has to

  • You have children under 18 and no written, witnessed Will naming a guardian
  • You have a guardian in mind but have never asked them, or never confirmed it in writing
  • Your life cover names your child directly, with no Trust to receive the payout
  • You are the only person who knows your child’s allergies, medications, school fees and doctor
  • You want to have this conversation with your co-parent but need somewhere to start

Why this checklist exists

“Every parent I sit with has a plan for their child in their head. Almost none of them have it on paper. This checklist is the afternoon that moves it from one to the other — before a court, a hospital or a bank has to guess.”

Start this weekend

  1. Share it. Send the checklist to your co-parent or partner on WhatsApp right now. Everyone needs to be part of this conversation.
  2. Sit together. Book one afternoon this month and work through the most urgent sections first: guardianship, insurance, legal.
  3. Act on the gaps. Every unchecked box is a gap that puts your child at risk. Start with guardianship and the Will.
  4. Go deeper. Use the Kids Legacy Tracker to store the actual details, then structure it properly inside the Challenge.
